3 Questions

This week I'm in Canada where shoppers can now go into more than 50 stores and walk out with a pre-installed Linux computer. At a recent technology conference I kept getting asked the same three questions:

Question 1: How much money can I save? Hundreds or even thousands. Microsoft Office XP alone is $450. You can get LindowsOS on a 1 GHz computer with 128 MB RAM, 10 GB hard drive, CDRW AND StarOffice 6.0 for less than the cost of Microsoft Office alone. Question 2: Is there comparable software? Yes — hundreds of great Linux programs for just about any task, all available at lindows.com/migrationprograms. Question 3: Can I work with my existing documents? Absolutely — StarOffice opens and saves .doc, .xls, and .ppt files. Hundreds of cautious users emailed us documents and were amazed when we returned them edited in StarOffice.

Hunting for the X-File Ghost

AI will soon rule the world. It will decide if you paid your taxes, qualify for a mortgage, whether your kid is admitted to university, if someone is eligible for parole, if you've been naughty on social media, etc. EVERYTHING. But what happens if it's WRONG? Here's an unbelievable and ominous situation where a cybersecurity company publishes a report stating an American company was part of a Chinese cybercriminal organization. The story spread around the world. One enormous problem: the software they claim as evidence doesn't exist, but nobody bothered to research it. No news site. No security companies. Nobody. Well, I decided to research it, and here's my results.
