MP3.com

acquired
Founded 1997·Acquired by Vivendi/Universal (2001)

Founded in 1997, MP3.com took MP3 from hacker obscurity to the most popular media format in the world. We helped design and sell the first MP3 players in the world, invented on-demand CD printing, created the largest artist community in the world, had the largest library of authorized free MP3 tracks, took the company public on NASDAQ with, at the time, the largest internet IPO. Created innovative technology BeamIt which stored personal music CDs online in just 2 seconds. Yeah - 2 secs on even the slowest dial-up modem. Invented Instant Listening where users could buy a physical CD and immediately hear all the tracks. (Music industry didn't like this BeamIt and InstantListening and sued us for it.) Raised venture capital from Sequoia Capital and Idealab, went public on NASDAQ with the largest internet IPO of all time. Grew annual revenues to more than $80M and sold the profitable company to Vivendi/Universal. Company sold to Vivendi Universal, the world's largest music company.
