Nikesh,
I received the letter from your attorneys demanding that I take down a post on X and videos about how your company, Palo Alto Networks, and Koi are defaming my company, MeetingTV.
I'm writing this as an open letter since the last 2 emails I sent to you went unanswered. As I explained in those emails, Koi, an Israeli security company your company acquired, published a report with a long list of false allegations against MeetingTV. That report claimed MeetingTV:
• Had a company registration linked to Chinese provinces
• Had Chinese comments and variable names in our code
• Used affiliate fraud schemes specifically designed for Chinese e-commerce platforms
• Was part of a well-funded Chinese cybercriminal syndicate
• Engaged in corporate espionage
• Was operating as a front for the Chinese
Following that report, Palo Alto Networks (and others) began blocking traffic to my company and making false and defamatory claims about my company. Specifically, Palo Alto Networks is telling the world that our URL is C2, which stands for "command and control" and is "used by malware and/or compromised systems to surreptitiously communicate with an attacker's remote server to receive malicious commands or exfiltrate data." (I'm attaching a screenshot below.)
I've notified you repeatedly directly and through your corporate channels that those allegations are false, yet as of the date of this letter, the blocking and false and defamatory statement remains, which is one of the reasons we were forced to file a federal lawsuit against Palo Alto Networks.
Do you think the claims above about my company as being a front for cybercriminals with many ties to the Chinese are accurate? We are a proud American company with no ties to the Chinese. Either those serious allegations were created by humans or machines. I suspect machines, and specifically AI hallucinations.
I know you are aware of the major problem of AI hallucinations because I've heard you speak about what a huge problem they are, with the latest models generating a 30% false positive rate.
What is concerning is that not only have our requests to stop falsely labeling us not been addressed, but neither Koi nor Palo Alto Networks contacted us in advance or allowed us to respond before we were labeled criminals. We were accused, tried, and convicted all without ever having a chance to defend ourselves.
Everyone deserves a chance to defend themselves; otherwise, when mistakes are made (which is inevitable), the falsely accused will be treated like criminals.
This is why I'm calling on you to have your company stop defaming us and also help me establish and promote a "digital bill of rights" whereby those accused of wrongdoing by AI-powered processes have the opportunity to defend themselves.
Any accused company or individual should:
1) Be informed of the accusations against them in advance, and shown the evidence.
2) Be allowed to defend themselves, including presenting their own evidence.
3) If a dispute remains, have a neutral third party arbitrate.
Doing this will minimize harm to those falsely accused. We are racing to a world where AI will decide if people qualify for a loan, are eligible to rent a house, can be accepted into college, have paid their taxes, are eligible for parole, and so much more. In each of those instances, people should have the right to defend themselves against faceless AI-judges or humans relying on AI-judgement.
Online security companies wield enormous power - power to digitally execute companies by labelling them as bad, which can trigger a global blockage. This is what happened to my company. You are the CEO of the largest security company in the world - a sector of increasing importance in the AI age. The world looks to you for leadership. Here's a chance to do that.
I'm asking you again, this time publicly, to stop defaming MeetingTV. Turn off those false statements in your service. Then let's work together to establish a digital bill of rights so we can guide the AI era to be safer for everyone.
You stated "nobody talks about" the issue of AI-generated errors, "but you should." Well, I am talking about it, and I'd like to talk directly to you about it. Responding directly to the demands in your letter, I will continue to talk about it to anyone who will listen. It is my duty as the CEO to defend my company just as you would defend Palo Alto Networks from allegations that you were criminals. I won't take down my posts or videos, but I look forward to the day we can shift the focus to a digital bill of rights, which we encourage all companies to voluntarily adopt. Give me a call so we can discuss these issues.
