At 7:30pm my home phone rang — a robo-call from my kids' school, the Superintendent telling me to ask California politicians not to cut K-12 schools. I was shocked the school was using emergency contact numbers to push a political position.
Under California Education Code 7054, school districts are strictly prohibited from engaging in political advocacy using public resources. Yet that is what was happening. I submitted a California Public Records Act request and got the Superintendent to agree to stop sending political messages.
The teacher's union flyer claimed $20 billion had been cut from schools and 30,000 teachers lost. Research showed this was completely deceptive. The Del Mar school budget has grown 46% during the time my children have been in attendance, and per student spending has grown every year. The number of credentialed teachers in CA has NOT changed over the last 3 years.
