Our battle with EMI over personal music lockers is approaching its two year anniversary. EMI's strategy: claim all tracks online are infringements, therefore anyone that links to or stores them is a knowing infringer. But EMI and other music companies distribute thousands of tracks online for promotion.
EMI is likely spending 10 times what we are on their legal attack — 8 attorneys showed up at a recent hearing. Our strategy is to use our community and the facts on our side to compete with their massive legal budget.
We've created a 'You Lie EMI' bookmarklet. Add it to your browser, then browse your favorite music sites. If you come across free downloadable EMI promotional tracks, click the bookmarklet. It checks if the artist is on EMI, and if so, you can submit the link. We'll assemble this list and present it to the court as evidence that EMI absolutely does online promotion.
