Telephone companies have quietly been connecting their phone networks up to the Internet. Gizmo5 is launching an experimental service to place calls from the Internet directly to millions of these phones — bypassing the traditional phone system and its costs entirely. These calls will be free because they travel only over the Internet.
This service is available for 11% of all US phones at launch, including many numbers from Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and MetroPCS. Simply install Gizmo5 software or use GizmoCall.com (browser-based) and dial 0101- followed by the 10-digit number.
Because these calls are VOIP calls, they don't have the costs associated with historical phone calls. They're more like an email message or instant messaging transmission.
