My newest business, AnywhereCD, is unfortunately on its last flicker of light. It's a real shame because I think it was a solid business idea, and I want to tell you about it so you can learn from my mistakes.
The concept was simple: create an online store where customers could get the immediacy of digital files along with the permanence of a physical CD. For one purchase price they would get the best of both worlds. Sounds great in theory, but I wasn't able to pull it off.
Sadly, few press outlets covered our launch. Maybe the price was too high? Maybe nobody cares about CDs anymore? Maybe having just Warner Music (20% of major label titles) made for a disappointing experience? The answer is probably a combination of all these factors.
Although AnywhereCD was an expensive experience and not my proudest accomplishment, I believe it helped push the world towards MP3. Since my campaigning, EMI is selling their entire catalog in MP3. Universal just kicked off a significant MP3 test.
