Five predictions for the desktop computer business in the upcoming year:
1) PCs will cost $0: Customers will receive free computers if they sign up for services like Internet connectivity. This is similar to the cell phone business. 2) Microsoft Windows XPLite: Microsoft will unveil a stripped-down, lower-cost version of XP to compete with Linux. 3) Desktop Linux reaches 10% adoption in schools, homes, and cost-conscious businesses. 4) Return of the Windows Wars: Several larger hardware companies will adopt their own window managers based on Linux, invigorate competition. 5) No all-in-one computers: Instead of one monolith, you'll see a proliferation of inexpensive PC-powered devices dedicated to specific purposes — like your music library, kitchen duties, home finances, and more.
