Last week's BusinessWeek quoted Microsoft's CEO calling Linux 'wacky.' I received an email from Hans de Vries, a Dutch LindowsOS reseller: 'I got a strange phone call this morning from Microsoft Netherlands. They are saying they are preparing a trial here and want to involve my company because I sell Lindows computers. I must stop selling Lindows because I don't have money for lawyers.'
My response to Hans, copied to Microsoft's CEO and EU competition authorities: 'Your email was very disconcerting. While they say they invite competition, behind the scenes they seem willing to take any actions — including blatant extortion — to squash competition. I will do what I can to support you. Although it's Thanksgiving holiday here, I will personally attend that meeting and sit alongside you.'
Meanwhile, LindowsOS is being adopted globally: Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, China, Netherlands, Turkey and more. These 'wacky' competitors are gaining ground in spite of resistance from the richest company in the world.
