A reporter came by last Friday. He thought using LindowsOS to write a story was impossible because his office used Microsoft Word .doc files. I turned on the Walmart.com computer and Click-N-Ran OpenOffice. I typed a sentence and saved it as Microsoft Word format. He was amazed.
Two myths Linux must overcome: 1) Linux is too hard to install. Not true — LindowsOS installs in under 5 minutes, point-and-shoot easy. 2) Linux has no graphical programs. Not true — OpenOffice opens .doc/.xls/.ppt files with a single click. GIMP is as good as Photoshop. Evolution feels like Outlook. FlowchartPro is like Visio.
Do the math: For a total cost of $499 including all software, computer users save more than $800 for a complete system compared to Windows.
